Asya Mohamed Hamisi

I am the firstborn in my family, born in Lamu county- Kenya.

I enrolled in my primary course and did my final KCPE exam in 1999, then in 2001

I enrolled at Lamu Swahili cultural center for a one-year course and graduated with a certificate in fashion and design in 2002.

In 2003, I got an opportunity to work at Peponi hotel as a fashion and design advisor. During my tenure, I made a lot of contributions in terms of staff uniforms which made Peponi an outstanding hotel in staff uniform design across Lamu county.

With the outbreak of Covid-19 which was a threat to the whole world, many hotels including Peponi had to encourage some of the staff to work at home. Eventually, things did not work well and some staffs was axed from their jobs.

After one year stay at home, I had an idea- of starting my own business as well as training my fellow women on fashion and design while at home. This was the best idea that sustain me and my family.

My business of selling eggs and training others kept me at the right track and eventually I had to expand this by including poultry farming which made me supply both eggs and live chicken to my customers.

This business sustained my life till 2022 when I was approached by the American Corner Lamu Coordinator to assist in training my colleagues on fashion and design as an instructor.
